If you own a local business, you know that word of mouth referrals and recommendations are one of the best ways to spread the word about your awesome products and services, and attract new customers and clients.
A recent survey of 2,500 consumers by Google, Ogilvie and TNS found that Facebook was one of the top 10 influencers in consumer purchase decisions. This is why I recommend that every local business owner encourage their best customers to review them on Facebook.
When a customer leaves you a positive review on your Facebook business page, their Facebook friends will be notified about that review and see it in their own news feeds. Since every Facebook user has, on average, 130 Facebook friends, it is easy to see why Facebook reviews can be a valuable tool for generating awareness and interest in your business.
It is not immediately obvious how to enable the reviews function (see illustration below) on your Facebook business page, so here is a quick tutorial for you.
- Log into your Facebook business page account, then click the About link under your Facebook cover photo.
- Click on the “Page Info” link in the left hand menu then hover your cursor to the right of the “Categories” section until the light blue “Edit” link appears. Select the “Local Business” category here.
- Hover the cursor over the subcategories section to access the Edit function here. A long list of subcategories will appear. Select the subcategory(ies) that best describe your business here.
- Add a Valid Street Address for Your Business
(Note: you are limited to the subcategories that Facebook has already established; unfortunately, your subcategory choices don’t always include the best description for your business. If that is the case, just choose the subcategory that is the closest match to your business.)
Be sure to click “Save Changes” when you are done.
A section will pop up where you can add your business address. You must enter a valid street address for your business here in order to enable the Reviews tab and capability on your Facebook page. If you do not enter a valid street address, you will not be able to enable the Reviews feature on your page. Under the map section you must also check the box to the left of the instruction, “Show map, check-ins and star ratings for your page.” Be sure to save your settings again.
Once you have completed these steps, the Reviews tab should appear under your Facebook cover photo. (See illustration at the top of this article.)
How to Submit a Facebook Review
To write a review, your customers need to click the Reviews link underneath the cover photo of your Facebook business page Business Page. A window will pop up, inviting the reader to give a star rating for your business.
When customers click on the stars, they will be prompted to leave a review on your timeline. Ideally, they will give you a 5-star rating and set their review to display publicly so anyone can view it.
Don’t Forget to Reply To Your Reviews!
When you do receive a review on your Facebook business page, be sure to reply as soon as possible in the comments section, thanking the reviewer for their feedback.
